Family History Uncovered

From as far back as I can remember, I have always fiercely admired my grandmother, Leora Couture-Wilson. She had such confidence, eloquence and lit up a room with her smile as soon as she walked in.

My grandmother became very interested in genealogy, wanting to discover more about her family's history and traditions. She had always felt a strong connection to nature and the outdoors so it brought many things into perspective when she discovered the Couture family's Métis heritage.

My great-grandfather, Joseph Rudolph Couture, had grown up in the Owen Sound area and lived a traditional life but was discouraged from speaking about it to others as a young man. However, he was nothing but proud and happy to share his stories with the family.

I am forever grateful to my great-grandfather and grandmother for teaching me about my own culture and encouraging me to embrace my identity as a young Métis woman.

Very well said, Rebekah. Even today, I hear many say Metis and other Aboriginal peoples make too much of their lineage. That they just assimilate to some narrow, simplistic vision of "a Canadian." May the day arrive soon when no one will be forced to feel shame for their heritage.
