Mission Accomplished: Chris Hadfield Sharing the Human Experience of Space

Laura posted a photo:

By Laura Austin

May 13th, 2013 I will always remember where I was and what I was doing when Chris Hadfield came back to earth. Memorable, historic, excellent and exciting; the landing was watched by many anticipating our first glance of our Astronaut hero back home.
The orange and white parachute slowed down the Soyuz as it plummeted down and one second before landing two sets of three engines fired slowing the vehicle, to soften the impact… a bit, however the slam of the Soyuz, unofficially clocked at exactly 10:31pm EST, right on time and right on target smashed into the earth like the force of a car crash. As described by Astronaut Tom Marshburn “Oppressive 4gs, whipping and spinning under chute, and detonating impact of landing. Best ride of our lives.” The Soyuz landed up right then a spring breeze seemed to blow over the capsule on the Kazakhstan Steppe. Tom Marshburn was on the bottom on the Soyuz on his back, Roman Romanenko was in the middle and Chris was hanging from the ceiling awaiting rescue crews.
Thumbs Up!!! Chris was the last to be extricated from the Soyuz. It seemed like forever before he was carried over to his chair and wrapped in a blue blanket. Immediately being tended to by a nurse, but when Chris appeared he had a smile on his face and a happy look in his eyes like he had just had the ride of his life. Clearly feeling the instant effects of gravity, the spring sun shone down on Chris like a big welcome home.
When Chris Hadfield took on the responsibility of Commander of the ISS he had 3 objectives in mind: keep the crew healthy, keep the ship healthy, and to utilize the orbiting laboratory to its full potential in science and sharing his experience. Chris can easily put a big check mark next to all those goals. Mission Accomplished.
The last time Chris spoke to Mission Control the words he poetically strung together were beautiful, heartfelt, and thoughtful. Chris said “It’s been an incredible personal experience as well as an extremely satisfying professional experience for all of us on board. Thanks to the Canadian Space Agency who have worked this flight for years and supported so magnificently and allowed this to happen on behalf of my country. It’s just been an extremely fulfilling and amazing experience, end to end. From this Canadian to all the rest of them I offer a debt of gratitude” Chris Hadfield is so thankful for the ground team that helped him share his mission.
Chris Hadfield did not join social media to see how many followers or “likes” he could collect or to seek out fame. Chris used social media as a tool to educate people on space exploration, to share his experience; the science of it, the space of it, the wonder of it, but most of all the human experience. To make the International Space Station a fabric of peoples everyday lives and the more we all understand the purpose of the ISS, the better we all will be.
Chris Hadfield took part in his first news conference with the Canadian media on Thursday May 16, 2013. Chris was looking forward to talking with the reporters hoping it would organize the experience in his own head. Chris answered all the questions in his thoughtfully descriptive vocabulary he is noted for. When Chris was asked about the effects of gravity on his body he replied with a laugh “my body was quite happy living without gravity. Weightlessness is a superpower.” When you think about it Chris has not held his head up in 146 days, he has not taken one step in 5 months. Chris explained that his body is sore like he had played an intense game of full contact hockey.
For the rest of Chris Hadfield’s life he will be asked what it feels like readjusting to gravity and he will do his best to explain it. As well as using his own words he has loaned his body to the benefit of science. For exploring further into the universe as well as helping with degenerative diseases that come with aging. The side effects of re-entry into gravity mimic that of getting old; osteoporosis and hardening of blood vessels are examples. The tests Chris is having done requested of him from many nations. Including right here at home in Canada. Of course the USA for NASA and as far away as Japan, in which Chris tweeted a photo of his wrist all rigged up in medical equipment to monitor the workings of the human body post re-entry into the earths pull. Chris is giving himself for all these experiments, helping a lot of people now and in the future. Chris Hadfield is not a lab rat, Chris is a renaissance Spaceman that has captured the world’s interest into what it is like to come back into earth’s atmosphere and is going to continue to share his experience through social media. Evidence of the world’s curiosity is in the fact that Chris’s twitter followers continue to rise even though his feet are firmly planted on the ground.
Chris Hadfield went around the earth 2300 times and spent the last 5 months living the “unforgiving minute “not wasting a second of his time in space. If he had 30 seconds free he went to the window, camera in hand. To think about it I don’t think Chris has wasted a second in his life; maximizing every minute with learning, music, and challenging himself all with the goal in mind of reaching his dreams.
Chris Hadfield does not have a favourite photo that he took because every photo he took there was a reason behind it. He would look out the window through his lens and stumble across something, bring it into focus and feel like he just had to share it with the people on earth. However Chris’s most significant photo came early on in his mission aboard the ISS. It was something only Chris had read about. As the ISS was zooming over the Indian Ocean and the sun was rising there it was a noctilucent cloud; and because Chris had people teach him how to set his camera in order to capture this rare image he snapped the photo. Chris says “It’s not the most beautiful or comical, but it’s significant.” Another example of how preparation can get you what you want in life.
Chris has so much to tell and each story I have heard Chris describe has created an image engaging all the senses, but most of all the heart; lovely memories in the human experience.
One could say that Earth wanted Chris back on her soil and pulled him home, but being brought back to earth is just another part of Chris Hadfield’s plan of spreading the word about space exploration. No matter where Chris Hadfield is, he will be forever “Out of this World”.

Tim Hortons temporary foreign worker policies

john posted a photo:

To whomever reads this...I felt the need to get this story out and possibly investigated by the news outlets as they obviously have the resources to find out what is really going on.

This is what happened today May 19th/2013 @ 2pm...at the Tim Horton's on 13th Avenue in Medicine Hat.

My girlfriend and I went to Tim Horton's for our customary coffee and while waiting in line there were two handicapped people being served. The woman whom I later came to know as "Mercedes Byrde" handle the handicapped couple with the up most respect and had the patience of a saint as the line grew even longer behind us. We had our coffee in hand and went to our truck and in the middle of our conversation I heard someone literally balling. I looked over to my left and noticed the woman who had just served the handicapped couple then ourselves crying her heart out in her car. My Girlfriend immediately got out of the truck and approached Mercedes and asked what was wrong. She replied "I was just fired for no reason". Having just been served by this woman and watching her deal with customers with the best service I've ever seen I asked her a few questions.

Q - Why did they fire you?
A - "Because they said I was rude to customers"

Q - Was there any other reason why they would fire you?
A - She was written up for an incident about a bagel which she had reserve for a customer who had paid for it. (more investigation needed)

Q - How long did you work for Timmies?
A - Over 16 Years

I was taken aback by this poor soul crying so hard and the reason really upset me. My girlfriend and I immediately went into the Tim Horton's and I asked to speak to the manager. I was greeted by the supervisor "Gabby" and I asked her why they just fired this woman. She replied... We don't need to tell you. I told her that Mercedes just informed me that she was fired for underling issues. I can respect that Tim Horton's doesn't need to tell a customer why they do what they do but in this case I would not let it go. Next we spoke to the manager who identified himself as "George" I asked him the very same questions I asked Gabby and all he would say over and over is "I don't have to answer that".

I read the news several times a day and have read many stories about temporary foreign workers ie;RBC, TD Canada Trust, Mining etc. I have also noticed and been quite vocal about the significant number of these temporary foreign workers that seem to be appearing at all of our local Tim Horton's. I asked "George... how many temporary foreign workers they had employed? And again he said "I don't have to answer that"
This made us so angry we wanted to just swat this smug little man upside the head. By this point with our voices being raised the whole store was watching and listening. I told "George" that if the reason for this woman being fired was because of an arbitrary reason so they could hire another foreign worker, "WE the customers can be dicks too"(sorry I was pretty mad at this point) I warned him I would be using social media and the new outlets and all he did was shrug his shoulders! Having refrained from assaulting "George" we went out to console Mercedes and I had made the decision to contact the media and try to help this poor woman.

Later in the afternoon my girlfriend called Mercedes to make sure she was ok and we found out another tantalizing bit of information "the manager "George" is quite possibly a temporary foreign worker himself"!!!

Just so you understand, Myself nor my girlfriend have never met Mercedes personally until this incident. We have however been to this Tim Hortons's several times and have always experienced great service with a big smile every time we encountered her. I sincerely hope you the news outlets can investigate this and find a resolution for this woman who has given her life to Tim Horton's only to be thrown to the curb. I am unsure if she would even return to Tim Horton's as she was crushed but I do think she deserves a very public and formal apology.

Thank You,

john Savignac
